  • Catalogue Essay

    - Omega was commissioned to oversee the “Alaska Project”, comprised of four individual classified assignments dedicated to designing space-qualified timepieces for NASA’s manned missions. This series of top-secret projects resulted in a number of collectible watches, worn by prominent astronauts who went to space in the 1970s. Now considered holy grails among collectors and scholars, the originals are often only found in museums or in the possession of Omega and NASA. In November 2022, an original 1970’s Speedmaster Professional "Alaska Project" ref. 145.022 was auctioned at PHILLIPS Geneva for a whopping CHF 201,600.

    - To celebrate this monumental legacy, Omega released a 1970-piece limited edition in 2008 as per the present example. The production number is a nod the year of the “Alaska II” Project, which subsequently inspired the ref. 311.32.42.30.04.001. Faithful to its predecessor, the modern interpretation bears a distinctive dial display, similar to its predecessor, which was developed in “space simulators” for optimised performance catered to the conditions in outer-space.

    - The present Alaska Project is numbered 409 of a limited edition of 1,970 pieces. Offered in excellent overall condition, it is complete with all accompanied documents and accessories, including its red anodized aluminum protective case, tools, an additional stainless steel bracelet and white velcro straps.

  • Artist Biography

    Omega

    Swiss • 1848

Omega's rich history begins with its founder, Louis Brandt, who established the firm in 1848 in La Chaux de Fonds. In 1903, the company changed its name to Omega, becoming the only watch brand in history to have been named after one its own movements. A full-fledged manufacturer of highly accurate, affordable and reliable watches, its sterling reputation enabled them to be chosen as the first watch company to time the Olympic Games beginning in 1932. Its continued focus on precision and reliability ultimately led their Speedmaster chronograph wristwatch to be chosen by NASA in 1965 — the first watch worn on the moon.

Key models sought-after by collectors include their first, oversized water-resistant chronograph — the reference 2077, early Speedmaster models such as the CK 2915 and 2998, military-issued versions of the Seamaster and oversized chronometer models such as those fitted with their prestigious caliber 30T2Rg.
