Catalogue Essay
Mortiz Grossmann is a relatively new entry in the world of luxury independent watch manufacturing first established in 2008 with watches released to the market in 2010. Since that time, they have become an appreciated collectors brand from Glashütte Germany, and while not as well-known as A. Lange & Söhne, they are known for their high quality functional movements with classic conservative designs that delivers on performance. Their BENU collection of watches ranges from time only wristwatches, to examples with power reserve and like the present timepiece, a flying three-minute tourbillon wristwatch with stop seconds mechanism allowing for greater precision by stopping the tourbillon when setting the watch and then through the push button in the band start the mechanism again.

In 2018 in celebration of the of their 10th anniversary, Moritz Grossmann offered a selection of 24 unique timepieces at auction. The BENU Tourbillon Orange Titanium was included and is a wonderful mix of both precision quality workmanship and a contemporary 21st century design. Keeping the standard layout and function of the BENU tourbillon watch, this is unique both for its titanium case, as well as its orange dial. The watch has a modern sporty feel. The other BENU tourbillons were offered in rose gold with white dial (25 pieces), white gold with white dial (50), white gold with black dial (10 pieces) and a limited tourbillon in white gold with blue dial.

The ultra-light oversized case features an orange regulator style dial with grey subsidiary dials for hours and subsidiary seconds with dials matching the titanium case. The tourbillon cut out at the 6 o’clock means the minutes 25-35 are missing, which has been added between the two subsidiary dials, and with an extended regulator hand the hours are easily read. The tourbillon’s special stop second is a brush made with human hair and is visible when the movement is stopped. This unique wristwatch is a lovely example of modern day horology and comes complete with original warranty and presentation box.
