Catalogue Essay
Long the iconic wristwatch of Minerva, the Pythagore was part of the watchmaker’s line up for several decades. A gentleman’s wristwatch in the most classic Swiss style, the Pythagore gets its name from the cal. 48 movement inside. Designed in 1943 by Andre Frey – the Frey family-owned Minerva until it was sold in 2000 to Italian investors – the cal. 48 was laid out according to Pythagoras’ golden ratio, resulting in the distinctive, linear bridges.

Dating to 1997, during the golden age of Minerva as a family-owned company – the brand is now owned by Montblanc - this example is an original Pythagore with a 34 mm case and two-tone, silvered dial with leaf-shaped hands. (Later versions of the Pythagore were upsized to a more modern 38 mm).

The size and aesthetics of the watch are unquestionably vintage-inspired, but the movement has been decorated in an attractive manner that meets contemporary standards for finishing. The bridges feature Cotes de Geneve and beveled edges, while the balance cock is equipped with a swan’s neck regulator index.
