Catalogue Essay
- After years of disrupting horological norms with his Horological Machines, Maximilian Büsser introduced the Legacy Machine in 2012—a round, classically styled watch that still broke conventions. The present example, released in 2017, is part of a limited edition of 33 pieces in titanium with a striking teal dial, and marks the fourth iteration in the series following the LM1, LM2, LM101, and LM Perpetual.
- While the Split Escapement retains the Legacy Machine’s signature visual codes—domed sapphire, white lacquered subdials, and a dramatic 14mm balance wheel suspended above the dial—it takes a daring step forward. The anchor and escape wheel are hidden on the opposite side of the movement, 12mm below the dial, linked by an exceptionally long 11.78mm balance staff. Developed in collaboration with Irish watchmaker Stephen McDonnell, the movement blends traditional Swiss craftsmanship with forward-thinking engineering, offering 72 hours of power reserve.
- Matching the technical brilliance within, the teal dial is crafted using PECVD (plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition), which creates an iridescent, shimmering surface with subtle texture. The result is a vivid, almost liquid display of color and depth—a futuristic finish for one of MB&F’s most technically ambitious.
