Catalogue Essay
Bernhard Lederer is a German born, Swiss based independent watchmaker, member of the AHCI since 1985 he has been creating complicated movements behind the scenes for large brands but decided to step into the limelight in 2020 by launching a project in the works for decades: the Central Impulse Chronometer.

A fascination with chronometry and escapements led Lederer to take on the task of bettering George Daniels’s independent double-wheel, dual-impulse escapement (its self a take on Breguet’s natural escapement).
Similar to George Daniels' approach, Bernhard Lederer has installed the two escape wheels at the end of two separate gear trains, each with its own barrel. Lederer added on each of these independent gear trains a 10-second constant force remontoire, a mechanism that rewinds a small spring every 10 seconds and thus ensures an even flow of power to the escapement. They operate every 10 seconds, one after another, so that a remontoire is delivering energy every five seconds.

The escapement components and their geometry have been optimised, paring down the weight of energy-intensive components and reducing the internal friction of the escapement to a minimum.
One of the most eye-catching aspects of the Central Impulse Chronometer is that there are two separate seconds hands on the dial, each spinning in an opposite direction. This happens because each gear train has its own second hands.

A watch of incredible technical complexity and importance, Lederer’s Central Impulse Chronometer rightly won the innovation prize in 2021 at the GPHG. Originally launched in pink gold and white gold (like the present example) in only 25 pieces each the present Central Impulse Chronometer is a true work of horological excellence that will be studied in watchmaking schools in the years to come as a benchmark.
