Good To Know:
- Minute repeating single button chronograph from 1925
- Confirmed by L. Leroy Extract from the Archives
- Made for Est-Asiatique
L. Leroy & Cie ranked among the great Parisian watchmaking houses of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Founded in 1785 by Charles-Basile Le Roy as Horloger du Roi, the firm later operated as Le Roy & Fils before Louis Leroy assumed control in 1889 and renamed it L. Leroy & Cie. Under his leadership it excelled in naval chronometers and highly complicated pocket watches, culminating in the legendary Leroy 01 of 1900—a 24-complication masterpiece that remained the world’s most complex timepiece for nearly nine decades.
Manufactured in 1925, the present minute-repeating single-button chronograph was made for L’Est-Asiatique français, a French colonial trading and forestry company founded in 1902. Its success rested largely on Ernest Lesterre (1877–1932), a former naval officer who surveyed the Upper Mekong in 1901, joined the firm in 1908, and organised the floating of teak logs to Saigon. He later became Director-General and received the Légion d’honneur in 1925, the same year this watch was coincidently produced; the company was absorbed in 1932.
Accompanied by the Extract from the Archives of L. Leroy confirming its origin and its original presentation box. It is further presented in excellent overall condition, the watch retains its French hallmarks and crisp case numbers, with a monogram engraved on the hunter case.
