Catalogue Essay
• Reference 3307 was produced in the late 1970s and early 1980s in two finishes: black and olive-green anodised aluminium. As the predecessor to reference 3317, it was promoted by IWC as one of the lightest timepieces of its era, weighing just 44 grams. This was well before titanium became widely used in watchmaking. Due to its brief production period, it is considered a relatively rare reference.
• The watch features a date window at 3 o’clock and shares a similar design language with iconic compass watch (reference 3517). Often described as the “military version” of the compass watch, reference 3307 was never officially issued by any armed force and carries no military markings. However, the olive-green case of the present example gives it a distinctly military-inspired appearance. It is also fitted with a first-generation bracelet similar to that of reference 3517, allowing the watch to be laid flat over a map to measure distance using its 5mm links.
• Although the overall profile and appearance are similar to reference 3517, the dial of the present 1983 example is noticeably more minimalistic. It features only the Porsche Design branding, with a stylised "pd" logo followed by "PORSCHE DESIGN" in block letters at 12 o’clock. No text appears below the date window, further emphasising the clean and understated design.
