Catalogue Essay
• The Porsche Design Chronograph 2 is a remarkable product of the successful collaboration between IWC and Porsche Design. Following the groundbreaking TITAN Chronograph 01 (ref. 3700), this model continued the legacy of minimalist, functional design, enhanced by advanced materials and engineering.
• The reference 3701 is particularly notable for its sleek, integrated construction and use of aluminium, a material that was considered exotic and challenging to work with at the time. Crafted from a special light-metal alloy with a hard anodized surface, the case required IWC to develop entirely new tooling and manufacturing techniques to meet the precise tolerances demanded by Porsche Design’s aesthetic. The result was a chronograph that was lightweight, durable, and visually seamless, featuring recessed pushers and a first-generation bracelet that reflected the Bauhaus-inspired philosophy of form following function.
• Its type 4 dial omits the "PD" logo beneath the "PORSCHE DESIGN" block letters, resulting in a clean and highly legible layout. White markers and hands contrast sharply against the matte black background, reminiscent of automotive gauges and a tribute to Porsche’s design heritage. A red chronograph seconds hand adds a subtle yet purposeful accent, reinforcing the watch’s motorsport-inspired character. This model exemplifies the technical and aesthetic harmony between Swiss watchmaking and German industrial design.
• The present 1984 example features a grey anodized aluminium alloy case, which distinguishes it from the more common black anodized version. This allows the tachymeter ring stands out on the bezel. Its circular profile recalls the original Chronograph 1 and is paired with an integrated first-generation bracelet, which was designed to conform comfortability to the wrist. The cohesive design gives the watch a substantial presence, despite the steep bevel on the bezel. This distinctive shape hinted at the design direction Porsche would pursue in the years to come.
