Catalogue Essay
• Under CEO Günter Blümlein’s leadership, the brand joined forces with Alexander Porsche, the designer behind the iconic Porsche 911, in 1978. Around the same time, IWC developed the Ocean BUND watches for the German Navy, built to withstand 30 bar of pressure and equipped with a flat sapphire crystal and a bright orange minute hand. In the meanwhile, a civilian version was developed as well.
• At the 1983 Basel Fair, IWC introduced the Ocean 2000, reference 3500. It was released under references 3500, 3504, and 3524, each denoting a different bracelet generation. The present ref. 3504 features a second-generation bracelet, which each link has two pushpins and can be depressed with a special U-shaped adjustment tool that is included in the accessories.
• What makes the present example from 1988 stand out is its dial design. Echoing the minimalist aesthetic of the later dial, which features only the inscriptions “Porsche Design” at 12 o'clock and “by IWC” at 6 o'clock, the present example takes a slightly different approach. It places both brand signatures together at 12 o'clock, with “IWC” on the first line and then “Porsche Design” on the second.
