  • 'I am attracted by the ephemerality in the painting, it’s naivety in trying to depict the 'truth of life.'' —Ilya KabakovIn 2013, four paintings of the same subject were made 'about sun'. What are they about? I have long been interested by the old theme of the relationship of 'real' reality and its depiction on the 2-dimensional canvas. In 'classic' painting, the creator does everything possible to convince the viewer that they are seeing the reality and it’s 3-dimensional 'realness'. Conversely, I am attracted by the ephemerality in the painting, it’s naivety in trying to depict the 'truth of life.' I understand the painting to be the thin film, like a light mark on the cigarette paper which the ray of light easily pierces, even if the marks are doubled, like in this series of 'four paintings about sun.' - Ilya Kabakov
