Mario Buccellati ensured that no grain of gold went untouched. In hand crafting a jewel, the “Prince of Goldsmiths” used his signature engraving techniques to transform precious metals into fabric-like finishes that mimicked silk, lace and tulle. This Renaissance inspired Italian classic is set with 2.85 carats of diamonds, and its simple elegance will make a regal frame for any woman’s neck.

Omega. A Gold ‘De Ville’ Wristwatch, Circa 1970

\n\n

This Omega, De Ville, Jeux D’or mechanical wristwatch dials me back to the 1970’s. Though there were models from this collection that featured crystals made from both amethyst and citrine, this example displays the distinctive emerald-cut sapphire crystal that sets it apart for me. It’s solid but supple bracelet shows mastery of goldsmith technique by incorporating hand-finished texture with an openwork lattice pattern. Inspired by the designs that Andrew Grima created for Omega and introduced in 1971, this groovy watch is only missing a jumpsuit and wooden platforms!

\n\n

Angela Cummings for Tiffany & Co. A pair of diamond, platinum and gold earrings

\n\n

Unlike much of Angela Cummings’ jewelry that is organic in form, nature inspired and inlaid, these earrings from 1982, are geometric sculptures that interact with space. Masterfully created and designed, this form explores the oddity of perception and illusion, similar to Op Art. I like that these earrings are unusual, they are rarely found for sale, and more importantly that their shape and balance appear to be revolving.

Los Angeles is steeped in glamour, and some of the most important jewels in history have walked down our red carpets.
\n

\n\n

PHILLIPS: The common perception of Los Angeles style is contemporary and laid back, how does jewelry fit into that lifestyle?

\n\n

ALEXIS VOURVOULIS: While the sunshine and proximity to the ocean lends itself to a relaxed vibe, the allusion that nobody dresses here is a misnomer. Los Angeles is steeped in glamour, and some of the most important jewels in history have walked down our red carpets. The juxtaposition of old Hollywood and contemporary Los Angeles sets the perfect backdrop for jewelry. In this city anything goes and jewelry can be worn and enjoyed in a relaxed and approachable way.

Specialist Pick: A diamond and turquoise necklace by Lalaounis, part of a single-owner collection from a Los Angeles collector being offered in the upcoming Jewels and More online sale in September.

\n\n

P: What advice can you give to new jewelry collectors buying at auction?

\n\n

AV: As simple as this may sound, my advice is to buy what you like and build a relationship with a specialist. Jewelry is a unique department because it is highly personal and very technical, there is a lot to consider especially when purchasing a gemstone or diamond. Specialists have extensive knowledge and expertise; they understand the market and they love to share their knowledge. You can, and should, use that to your full advantage.

\n\n

\n\n

Specialist Pick: A multistrand diamond briolette and gold necklace being offered in the upcoming Jewels and More online sale in September.

\n\n

P: Tell us a little about your passion for jewelry and how you made your way to Phillips?

\n\n

AV: I feel in love with jewelry 15 years ago when I took an inventory job at a high-end retail store in Carmel, California. Knowing absolutely nothing about jewelry, my plan was to work for one year, save every penny, and move to Paris. About two months later, I handled my first Art Deco bracelet by Cartier, and I was obsessed. One year turned into five, I took a detour to the GIA in Carlsbad for my Graduate Gemology degree, and finally made it to Paris in 2012 to study design and fabrication à la méthode française at the Haute Ecolé de Joaillerie.

\n\n

\n
Living and studying in Paris elevated my technical and historical knowledge of jewelry. I was also struck by the cultural heritage of jewelry in France.
\n

\n\n

Living and studying in Paris elevated my technical and historical knowledge of jewelry. I was also struck by the cultural heritage of jewelry in France. Inspired, I started a niche business offering private historical jewelry tours. It was a true passion project for me and made the transition into auction a natural choice.

\n\n

When Susan Abeles, Head of Jewelry for the Americas, asked me to come to Phillips I knew it was the next step for me. We previously worked together at Bonhams and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to join her team.

He was determined to bring the aesthetic of antiquity into modernity.
\n

\n\n

Treasured for its beauty and value, gold was a symbol of power and wealth to the ancient Greeks, who wove the warm-hued metal into their culture and heritage for thousands of years. The Mycenaean civilization (described by Homer as being “rich in gold”) and the Hellenistic and the Byzantine periods all left behind exquisite gold treasures and objets d’art. These precious artifacts, housed in museums around the world, are rare examples of master goldsmithing techniques that were lost for thousands of years—until 1957 when Ilias Lalaounis revived the ancient Greek traditions.

\n\n

Ilias Lalaounis was born into a multigenerational goldsmithing and watchmaking family whose workshop and residence sat below the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. As a young craftsman in 1940, Ilias became CEO of Zolotas, a jewelry house started by his uncle in 1895 that still makes jewelry. While working for his uncle’s firm, Ilias was approached by two women who had admired two beautiful Mycenae brooches in a museum and wanted to have reproductions made. A fortuitous commission that set Ilias Lalaounis on a path to becoming a master of age-old goldsmithing techniques and the international leader of the modern revival of Ancient Greek traditions in jewelry.

\n\n

Ilias Lalaounis, A Gold Necklace. Estimate $6,000 - 8,000. Jewels & More: Online Auction.

\n\n

After countless hours analyzing antiquity collections in museums, Ilias Lalaounis and his team of craftsmen mastered the ancient techniques, including hammered gold, granulation, repoussé, and filigree. This exploratory period produced an extensive collection of reproduction museum pieces that would go on exhibition at the Thessaloniki International Fair in 1957. The robust 22 karat gold jewelry on display was a striking departure from the European jewelry aesthetic popular in 1957, and the reviews were mixed. But Ilias believed there was a story to tell, and he was determined to bring the aesthetic of antiquity into modernity.

\n\n

Ilias saw jewelry as an artistic tradition of which he held three core beliefs: jewelry is a work of art equal to that of fine art; jewelry holds tremendous sentimental value and develops an emotional bond with the wearer; and each piece of jewelry carries a message and tells a story.

Ilias Lalaounis, A Sodalite and Gold Pendant Necklace. Estimate $2,500 - 3,500. Jewels & More: Online Auction.

\n\n

With a clear vision and strong ethos, Ilias Lalaounis opened his firm in 1969. A prolific artist, he found inspiration in specific periods of ancient art, ancient civilizations, and, of course, ancient Greece. Favoring 22 karat gold for its warmth and texture, Ilias created 50 jewelry collections totaling 18,000 designs.

\n\n

Globally recognized as an icon of art and design, Ilias Lalaounis’s works have been exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Smithsonian, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, la Chapelle de la Sorbonne, and the Pushkin Museum. François Mitterrand awarded Lalaounis the Chevalier degree of the Légion d’honneur, and he is the only jeweler to be inducted to the Académie des Beaux-Arts.

\n\n

The accolades extended beyond the art world. Lalaounis jewelry has been featured on covers of major fashion magazines and kissed the skin of fashion icons like Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor, Brigitte Bardot, Oprah, and Rihanna.

\n\n

With stores worldwide, the Lalaounis workshop moved to a larger facility in 1993, and the original workshop in Athens became the Ilias Lalaounis Jewelry Museum. Over 4,500 pieces of jewelry and objects from the original 50 collections belong to the permanent collection.
