Catalogue Essay
- Whilst the Opus and Histoire de Tourbillon collections were created to showcase Harry Winston’s unstoppable determination to explore unchartered realms of watchmaking, the Project Z line of timepiece where conceptually developed to exemplify the brand’s pursuit of material innovation.
- Project Z solely focused on the use of Zalium, a compound of zirconium and aluminum, developed by the son of the founder of Harry Winston, Ronald Winston. An accomplished chemical engineer, Ronald was fascinated by the chemical properties of zirconium, a non-reactive and hypo-allergenic metal (hence its application in surgical implants and instruments) harder than titanium and almost as light.
- Commencing in 2004, the Z1 was the first of several iterations from the Project Z line and was limited to 100 examples, of which the present timepiece is number 79.
- Cased at 44mm in diameter, the chronograph showcases not one, not two, but three retrograde indications showcasing hours and minutes in an offset subdial at 12 o’clock, 60-second retrograde chronograph counter at six, 30-minute retrograde totalizer at three and lastly the 12-hour totalizer at nine.
- Releasing a new model annually and progressing the narrative of the line, Harry Winston set the tone for everything else that was to come. In excellent overall condition the present Z1 represents the avant-guard vision of the Maison since the very begging.
