  • “Puyi said: “Here I made sacrifices.””
    —Georgy Permyakov

  • Watercolours by Gobulo Runqi, Puyi’s brother-in-law, likewise offer a fascinating glimpse of a palace perspective on the Chinese homeland and culture. It is an idealized vision, but one which dwells on everyday life rather than in the pomp and ceremonies of the imperial court.

The set of three watercolor paintings depicts a glimpse of architectures from old China: The Arch of chastity and filial piety, The Great Wall and the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. Drawn by Runqi and annotated throughout in Chinese by Puyi, Permyakov offered further explanatory notes on many of the works in Russian.

The Temple of Heaven, built in the first half of the 15th century, is an imperial sacrificial altar in Beijing. It symbolises the relationship between earth and heaven, the human world and the world of the gods. Here, emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties offered sacrifice to heaven and prayers for abundant harvests. When Puyi told Permyakov that “Here I made sacrifices.”, he referred to the sacrifices he made as Emperor at these sacrificial rituals.

The Arch of chastity and filial piety is a marble archway also called “Pai lou” in Chinese. It was a unique architectural form in ancient China, which is a product of the feudal society, yet they embody the wisdom and artistry of ancient craftsmen. Furthermore, each arch, regardless of the size is related to a particular person or an event. Every arch has a history or a story with profound implications and the arches are memories of the past. In this particular artwork (i), Permyakov inscribed '"Arch of chastity and filial piety" In Ancient China there was a regulation ‘Gi bu chuu’ — After sunset, married women could not leave the house. There was a night fire and, burned alive, the ladies’ souls could not escape out the gate. ‘Gi bu chuu’ was more important than life. They were granted this marble arch - ‘Phai lo’.", 1945-E' on the reverse of the artwork in Russian.
