  • Catalogue Essay

Encompassing multiple mediums, Friedrich Kunath’s work focuses on the exploration of universal themes on canvas. Subject matter is created from the depiction of human emotion in painting: evoking sentiments underlined with tragicomic pathos. His works, which lie comfortably between abstraction and representation, are saturated with vivid colour washes then overlaid with a variety of visual references.

Ragazzo dell’Europa (Helmut Berger), features the inclusion of almost satirical, cartoon-like images. The reference to Helmut Berger in the title alludes to the renowned actor, most famous for his collaborations with Luchino Visconti. The present lot includes the use of various mediums, including watercolour, inks and pencil, which converge to form a unified yet eclectic and intriguing image. This quality of creative depth is emphasised by the paradox between the bright washes of colour and the stark silhouettes, which somehow co-exist in eye-catching harmony.
