Inspired by the work of the great 18th‑century watchmakers Antide Janvier and, most certainly, Abraham‑Louis Breguet, François‑Paul Journe undertook a formidable challenge beginning in 1983: first to create a pocket watch harnessing the resonance phenomenon, and then, 16 years later, to translate it into a wristwatch. The result was the world’s first wristwatch to feature a resonance mechanism. Its movement comprises two independent balances, alternately serving as “exciter” and “resonator.” In motion, they produce a resonance effect, beating in synchrony and naturally compensating for each other’s minor discrepancies, yielding exceptional accuracy. Two individual 12‑hour dials, each with its own small seconds, anchor the dial architecture.

The present Chronomètre à Résonance is a second-generation example, denoted by the shift in reference from R (“Résonance”) to RN (“Résonance Nouvelle”). Featuring a 40mm platinum case, it houses the second‑generation 18K pink gold movement, the cal. 1499.3, distinguished by a different power reserve. The RN reference itself was discontinued in 2009. With its symmetrical dial layout, pink gold movement, and harmonious overall proportions, this iteration of the celebrated Résonance has become highly sought after by collectors.

Offered by the original owner, this fresh-to-the-market example is complete with its guarantee and presentation box, this is one certain to impress the discerning modern collector.

F.P. Journe

Swiss | 1999

Founded by watchmaker François-Paul Journe in 1999, the F.P. Journe brand is relatively young, but already is as highly regarded by collectors as many distinguished manufacturers with centuries-old heritage. In the minds of the world's savviest collectors, Journe is producing some of the finest wristwatches the market has ever seen. Mastering his craft from restoring historical timepieces, he was the first to create a wristwatch incorporating two escapements that benefit from the phenomenon of resonance — the Chronomètre à Résonance.

Key models include the Résonance, tourbillon wristwatches incorporating a remontoir and the limited edition Vagabondage series. Especially sought-after are his earliest "souscription" watches, made in 1999.
