Catalogue Essay
Introduced in 2005, the Chronomètre Souverain was inspired by the Marine chronometers of the early 19th century. It is quite often overlooked when it comes to the other models in the collection, such as the Centigraphe, the Optimum, and the Repeater. It debuted in a 40mm case in platinum and 18K pink gold case, like the present example, as F.P. Journe first non-limited edition model to have a central time display. It carries quite a simple dial: a small seconds subdial is at 7 o’clock, while the 56-hour power reserve indication at 3 o’clock. However, if one looks further into the watch, it offers far more than it looks.

Inside the case, the 18K pink gold movement is powered by two parallelly mounted barrels to achieve a remarkably stable source of energy within the movement. When you look at the movement through the sapphire caseback, the two barrels do not seem to be connected. This creates a sort of mystery between them. Overtime the Chronomètre Souverain has become a model of reference. The present example stands out with its “original dial”, which features a white guilloché dial with blue hands, exactly how it looks during its debut.

The present timepiece demonstrates the Maison’s philosophy: striving for precision while embracing simplicity. Offered in excellent condition along with its original guarantee, the present example is preserved in excellent overall condition.

F.P. Journe

Swiss | 1999
Founded by watchmaker François-Paul Journe in 1999, the F.P. Journe brand is relatively young, but already is as highly regarded by collectors as many distinguished manufacturers with centuries-old heritage. In the minds of the world's savviest collectors, Journe is producing some of the finest wristwatches the market has ever seen. Mastering his craft from restoring historical timepieces, he was the first to create a wristwatch incorporating two escapements that benefit from the phenomenon of resonance — the Chronomètre à Résonance.

Key models include the Résonance, tourbillon wristwatches incorporating a remontoir and the limited edition Vagabondage series. Especially sought-after are his earliest "souscription" watches, made in 1999.
