Catalogue Essay
- The Chronomètre Holland & Holland is a limited edition timepiece created through a collaboration between F.P.Journe and the prestigious British gunmaker Holland & Holland in 2017 and 2018. This watch is a tribute to craftsmanship, heritage, and mechanical excellence. The project reflects a shared philosophy between the two brands: a passion for heritage, precision, and artisanal excellence. The use of historic gun barrels not only makes each watch one-of-a-kind but also connects it to a rich tradition of bespoke manufacturing dating back to the 19th century.
- Two of Holland & Holland’s museum barrels of over hundred years old, which were registered by hand in the company’s books, were used to make magnificent haute horology F.P.Journe timepieces. Barrel No. 1382, dating to 1868, yielded 38 dials, while barrel No. 7183, dating to 1882, produced 28 dials - the present example is one of them.
- At the Holland & Holland factory, each barrel was cut lengthwise and rolled flat, then sliced into smaller strips. These were cleaned, polished, and thinned to the precise specifications required for watch dials. The material was then sent to Les Cadraniers de Genève, F.P.Journe’s own dial-making atelier, where the dials were cut out. Afterward, they returned to Holland & Holland for “browning”, a traditional gunmaking technique that both protects the steel and enhances the natural Damascus patterns. This artisanal process, unchanged since the late 1800s, ensures that each dial is entirely unique, making every watch a one-of-a-kind creation.
- Please note that a complementary servicing of the watch at F.P. Journe will be offered to the winning bidder within a period of 6 months after the sale.

F.P. Journe
Swiss | 1999Founded by watchmaker François-Paul Journe in 1999, the F.P. Journe brand is relatively young, but already is as highly regarded by collectors as many distinguished manufacturers with centuries-old heritage. In the minds of the world's savviest collectors, Journe is producing some of the finest wristwatches the market has ever seen. Mastering his craft from restoring historical timepieces, he was the first to create a wristwatch incorporating two escapements that benefit from the phenomenon of resonance — the Chronomètre à Résonance.
Key models include the Résonance, tourbillon wristwatches incorporating a remontoir and the limited edition Vagabondage series. Especially sought-after are his earliest "souscription" watches, made in 1999.
