Catalogue Essay
Since its introduction in 2000, the Chronomètre à Résonance has established itself as one of contemporary horology’s most iconic timepieces. Drawing inspiration from the works of the renowned 18th-century watchmaker Antide Janvier, François-Paul Journe embarked on a quest in 1983 to create a pocket watch utilizing the resonance phenomenon. This endeavor culminated in the release of the first wristwatch to harness this phenomenon about 17 years later. The movement features two independent balance wheels that, when in motion, create a resonance effect, allowing them to beat in synchrony where this natural interaction helps to equalize any discrepancies, enhancing overall accuracy.

In 2004, the second generation of this model, known as the RN series (for "Resonance Nouvelle"), was launched. The present timepiece is part of this series and stands out from its predecessors with a larger 40mm case, compared to the 38mm of the original model. It also boasts an updated 18K pink gold movement, featuring the caliber 1499.3, which replaced the 1499.2 around 2007, offering a different power reserve. The RN series was officially discontinued in 2009, making this numbered 518-RN from that year the final batch of ref. RN to leave the Journe workshop.

What sets this particular Chronomètre à Résonance apart is its exclusive Black Label dial, available only to existing owners of Journe timepieces and offered through official F.P. Journe boutiques worldwide, with extremely limited production numbers. Elegant and captivating, this watch is a true visual delight, with its black dial emphasizing the perfect symmetry between the two identical 12-hour indicators. Notably, the RN series was the last to feature this design detail and remains as the purest iteration among all its successors; subsequent models incorporated either a 24-hour and 12-hour indicator or rotating discs for the hours and minutes, with an analog 12-hour indicator positioned to the right in the third and final generation.

According to our research only 4 examples of the same configuration have appeared publicly in the auction market. The 5th example to appear and preserved in excellent condition and complete with its full set of accessories, this Chronomètre à Résonance Black Label represents an uber rare iteration of one of the most significant horological breakthroughs in recent decades. It is sure to captivate enthusiasts of contemporary technical horology, making it a remarkable opportunity for collectors seeking a unique specimen from the revered Resonance lineage.

F.P. Journe

Swiss | 1999
Founded by watchmaker François-Paul Journe in 1999, the F.P. Journe brand is relatively young, but already is as highly regarded by collectors as many distinguished manufacturers with centuries-old heritage. In the minds of the world's savviest collectors, Journe is producing some of the finest wristwatches the market has ever seen. Mastering his craft from restoring historical timepieces, he was the first to create a wristwatch incorporating two escapements that benefit from the phenomenon of resonance — the Chronomètre à Résonance.

Key models include the Résonance, tourbillon wristwatches incorporating a remontoir and the limited edition Vagabondage series. Especially sought-after are his earliest "souscription" watches, made in 1999.
