Good to know:
- Fully hand made skeletonized perpetual calendar with 24h indication
- Unique piece
- Using a very rare Pouzait escapement with remontoire
Whereas the Dino & Roberto Falcone father and son team are better known for their flamboyant and unusual case designs the present pocket watch is a scholarship changing and fantastic view into the makers evolution.
Previously unknown to the market, the present Falcone perpetual calendar pocket watch is a remarkable demonstration of individual craftsmanship and mechanical imagination. Entirely handmade by Dino Falcone in 1979, it combines the elaborate architecture of an 18th-century automatic carriage pocket watch movement with a 7 second remontoire with a highly unusual perpetual calendar mechanism and a boldly contemporary aesthetic.
The movement has been extensively reworked and transformed, with its mechanism skeletonized to view beneath a series of individually hand-engraved chapter rings. The calendar indications are arranged across the dial in a complex and highly sculptural composition, revealing the remarkable depth and intricacy of the mechanism beneath. Every element appears to have been conceived as part of a single visual construction, from the engraved rings to the carefully exposed wheels and levers.
Equally striking is the reverse, as the watch uses a Pouzait escapement where the balance spring is positioned centrally and surrounded by a balance wheel covering the vast majority of the circumference of the movement becomes the focal point of the composition. The balance wheel is a whirlwind shaped structure, which adds a kinetic dimension to the watch and transforms the traditional movement into a constantly evolving display.
At once rooted in the technical traditions of 18th-century horology and unmistakably the work of an independent contemporary maker, the present watch is a singular and previously unrecorded creation. Its combination of historical mechanical foundations, painstaking handwork and highly original design makes it a fascinating expression of Falcone’s approach to watchmaking.
The present watch is featured in the magazine Orologi Num 9 from 1989 of which a copy accompanies this lot.
