  • Catalogue Essay

    - Named after the brand’s founder Louis-Ulysse Chopard and its founding year, the L.U.C 1860 collection unveiled in 1997 is known for its elegance balanced with impeccable execution. Transforming the jewellery house to the realm of haute horology watchmaking, Chopard debuted the calibre 1.96 conceived together with Michel Parmigiani with nearly 3 years of development of the first COSC certified bi-directional micro-rotor movement.

    - In fact many considered the caliber 1.96 as one of the best self-winding calibers of the time, even being elected timepiece of the year on TimeZone (the world’s very first and biggest watch discussion forum in the 90s).

    - Fast forward to the modernized calibre L.U.C 96.40 within this example, it’s a workhorse beautifully decorated and acknowledged with the Geneva seal of approval, featuring stop-second function, swans’s neck index assembly, and stacked twin barrels power reserve of 65 hours powered by its solid 22K micro-rotor.

    - A perfect tribute to its original, the L.U.C 1860 salmon dial edition in Lucent steel was released in 2023, although not limited edition, it was limited in production according to Chopard. Wearing perfectly sized at 36.5mm diameter in Chopard’s exclusive alloy, the Lucent steel is crafted sustainably with 80% recycled elements which has a tougher and brighter quality compared to regular steel.

    - Embracing one of collector’s favourite choice of colour, the exquisite salmon guilloche dial is crafted by Metalum (now part of Chopard) who famously also produced the dials for Philippe Dufour’s Simplicity.

    - Perfectly demonstrating Chopard’s exceptional capacity for demonstrating tradition and innovation, the present timepiece is complete with its full set of accessories and furthermore kept in nearly unworn condition.

    Chopard

    Swiss • 1860

At the age of 24, Louis-Ulysse Chopard started his company L.U.C. Chopard in Sonviller, Switzerland. Since the brand's inception in 1860, Chopard understood the need for thin and accurate pocket watches to be functional for daily wear. The brand gained world recognition in 1912 after Tsar Nicolas II became a client.

Following Louis-Ulysse's death in 1915, his sons Paul-Louis and Paul André took over the business and moved their headquarters to La Chaux-de-Fonds. In 1963, the company was taken over by Karl Scheufele, who remains the brand's owner. Arguably Chopard's most recognizable design, the "Happy" line, was inspired by Scheufele's daughter Caroline. In 1996, his son Karl-Friedrich established Chopard as a manufacturer of its own range of in-house movements under the name L.U.C., creating groundbreaking, exquisitely finished watches that have earned the brand worldwide acclaim.
