- Numbered 4 of a limited edition of 10 pieces
- Winner of Aiguille d’Or at the 2017 GPHG Awards
- Inaugural minute repeater design using sapphire crystal gongs
Unveiled in 2016 for the 20th anniversary celebration of Chopard’s manufacture, the L.U.C Full Strike represents a revolutionary leap in an inaugural minute repeater design, boldly challenging centuries-old conventions with its patented monobloc sapphire gong system. A incredible feat, this new design landed the brand Aiguille d’Or title at the 2017 GPHG Awards.
Unlike traditional steel gongs struck by hammers and amplified by the case, Chopard integrates the gongs directly into the sapphire crystal—carved from a single seamless block without welds, screws, or glue. This innovation, born from years of development, produces exceptionally clear, crystalline chimes tuned to C and F, evoking the crystal clear ring of wine glass to a knife.
Cased in 42.5mm carburised steel with an open-worked dial, each strike from the mirror-polished steel hammers can be admired on the dial side of the timepiece thanks to the L.U.C calibre 08.01-L. The result was an innovation that took 15,000 hours of R&D with a crown-operated striking watch. Two power-reserve indications are positioned at 2 o’clock: one independent barrel for the strike work capable of up to 12 full sequences, and another barrel to store energy for timekeeping.
The strike governor responsible for synchronising the striking mechanism can be seen on the dial at 8 o’clock. To enhance the auditory pleasure, Chopard has managed to silence the characteristic humming sound of the strike governor and has eliminated the awkward and often unpredictably long silence that occurs between the last chime of the hours and the first of the quarters. Unlike traditional minute repeaters, the hours, quarters and minutes gear trains of the L.U.C Full Strike are superimposed and when one has finished, it triggers the next, maintaining a constant cadence and automatically skipping the silences. Meticulously finished and stamped with the prestigious hallmark of Geneva seal quality, the movement is finished with hand bevelled, polished and decorated with Geneva stripes.
Preserved in wonderful condition with a monotoned grey aesthetic featuring rhodium-plated Roman numerals, this is a limited edition of 10 pieces only. Numbered 4 and accompanied with its full set of accessories including the resonance tray that reveals and amplifies the crystal clear tone of the Full Strike, and additional sapphire crystal gongs.
Chopard
Swiss | 1860At the age of 24, Louis-Ulysse Chopard started his company L.U.C. Chopard in Sonviller, Switzerland. Since the brand's inception in 1860, Chopard understood the need for thin and accurate pocket watches to be functional for daily wear. The brand gained world recognition in 1912 after Tsar Nicolas II became a client.
Following Louis-Ulysse's death in 1915, his sons Paul-Louis and Paul André took over the business and moved their headquarters to La Chaux-de-Fonds. In 1963, the company was taken over by Karl Scheufele, who remains the brand's owner. Arguably Chopard's most recognizable design, the "Happy" line, was inspired by Scheufele's daughter Caroline. In 1996, his son Karl-Friedrich established Chopard as a manufacturer of its own range of in-house movements under the name L.U.C., creating groundbreaking, exquisitely finished watches that have earned the brand worldwide acclaim.
