Catalogue Essay

--The Tank Chinoise was first launched in 1922 as a reinterpretation of the original Tank wristwatch and inspired by traditional Chinese temple and portico construction. The classic Tank design was updated with broad vertical brancards at the 12 and 6 o’clock positions adding a bold architectural flair, a unique design amongst the brand’s timepiece collection.

--The present wristwatch is a limited edition released in 2022 for the 100th Anniversary of the original design, relaunch as the Cartier Privé Collection Tank Chinoise. The modern collection included limited editions in yellow gold, pink gold and platinum. The most significant change was the move to a larger, rectangular-shaped case compared with the smaller square-shaped case of the CPCP Tank Chinoise model from 1998-2008.

--The present platinum Cartier Privé Tank Chinoise, number 143 of 150 pieces is offered in virtually brand new condition with its full suite of accessories and is a stunning, modern 21st century reinterpretation of an iconic and highly sought after timepiece. The watch is offered by the original owner.

French

With the Constitution of 1848 came a new standard for luxury in France. Founded one year prior by Louis-Francois Cartier, the house of Cartier was one of the first to use platinum in jewelry making. This incredibly expensive material became the stepping-stone for Cartier to experiment in form, mechanisms and attitude. It helped men move from pocket watches to wristwatches, effectively making the watch much more functional and prominent in a man's overall wardrobe.

Cartier did not only touch on functionality. Inspired by a commissioned painting by George Barbier featuring a black panther at the feet of an elegantly bejeweled woman, Cartier began incorporating wild animals in his designs—most notably, Cartier Panthère rings, bangle bracelets and watches. Yet it wasn't until the late 1960s that the house of Cartier debuted their iconic yellow and rose gold LOVE collection, which includes the famous bracelet that only a special screwdriver can open.
