Catalogue Essay
--The Tank Cintrée is an emblematic design found across Cartier’s timepieces, from their early 20th century wristwatches to the 2021 Cartier Tank Cintrée Limited Edition 100th anniversary edition. In addition to the curved rectangular-shaped case with strong brancards on its sides, the model typically featured Breguet-style hands, elongated Roman numerals, and a chemin-de fer minute track.
--The present platinum Tank Cintrée, numbered “No. 1”, is a most probably unique example commissioned via Cartier’s NSO, or New Special Order, program by a collector with superb taste. The NSO program required applications to be reviewed before the designs could be granted and produced, and as of March 2025, the program has been suspended. Cartier created this bespoke masterpiece with a stunning salmon dial featuring classic gorgeous Roman numerals in lacquered blue surrounding a black chemin-de fer minute track. The crown is adorned with a ruby cabochon, signifying the use of platinum for the case material.
--The watch is offered for the first time at auction by the original owner and is in new, unworn condition. It is complete with its Certificate of Origin and presentation box. With its highly uncommon pairing of a platinum case and salmon-colored dial, this Cintrée is a wonderful representation of Cartier’s century old iconic timepiece for the discerning connoisseur.
Cartier
FrenchWith the Constitution of 1848 came a new standard for luxury in France. Founded one year prior by Louis-Francois Cartier, the house of Cartier was one of the first to use platinum in jewelry making. This incredibly expensive material became the stepping-stone for Cartier to experiment in form, mechanisms and attitude. It helped men move from pocket watches to wristwatches, effectively making the watch much more functional and prominent in a man's overall wardrobe.
Cartier did not only touch on functionality. Inspired by a commissioned painting by George Barbier featuring a black panther at the feet of an elegantly bejeweled woman, Cartier began incorporating wild animals in his designs—most notably, Cartier Panthère rings, bangle bracelets and watches. Yet it wasn't until the late 1960s that the house of Cartier debuted their iconic yellow and rose gold LOVE collection, which includes the famous bracelet that only a special screwdriver can open.
