To honor the legacy of Abraham-Louis Breguet, one of the greatest horological inventors in the history of watchmaking, the Classique Grande Complication collection features some of the most intriguing complications by Breguet. The present watch is a perpetual calendar with an equation of time complication, patented by Breguet in 1991.
The equation of time is a rare complication that displays the difference between mean solar time – our civil time based on a conventional twenty-four-hour period – and true solar time, which varies with the earth’s irregular orbit around the sun. The complex mechanism is driven by the ultra-thin self-winding cal. 502, modified from the Frédéric Piguet cal. 70 from the 1970s.
The dial of the ref. 3470 is adorned with instantly recognizable Breguet motifs. The fineness of the hand-crafted engine-turned silvered dial is paired with the iconic blued Breguet hands and a satin-finished chapter ring, stamped with the secret Breguet signature between 11 and 1 o’clock. The day-of-the-week disc and dial typography are in French, a rare feature comparing to other seen models. The fluted caseband and Breguet lugs are also details that speak the charm of a classic Breguet timepiece.
Another interesting gimmick is that the setting pin is connected with a chain, and inserted into the crocodile trap, a feature that is thoughtful, at the same time boosting the elegance of the timepiece. Offered in excellent condition with its original accessories, the represent ref. 3470 in yellow gold is a striking timepiece that blends mechanical mastery with aesthetic elegance, and is one not to be missed by the serious watch connoisseurs.
Breguet
Swiss | 1775Established in 1775 by Abraham Louis Breguet, widely considered the greatest watchmaker of all time, the storied brand continues to thrive in the modern era, creating exceptional high-end watches as the Swatch Group's premier prestige brand. Some of the most important and lasting inventions in watchmaking are attributed to Abraham Louis Breguet, including the tourbillon, shock resistance and the use of hammers and gongs employed in nearly all minute repeating watches made since.
Eighteenth and nineteenth century Breguet pocketwatches are especially sought-after by collectors, and many of them were made for the elite of European society, including Napoléon and Marie Antoinette. Key wristwatches from the twentieth century include oversized dress watches, two-register chronographs, triple calendars and Type XX aviator's chronographs made for the French military and civilians.
