Catalogue Essay
- Breguet pioneered one of horology’s most revered complications: the tourbillon. Each Breguet tourbillon carries the inscription “7 Messidor An 9”, which corresponds to June 26, 1801, in the Gregorian calendar.

- Developed during the turbulent years following the French Revolution, Abraham‑Louis Breguet conceived and refined the tourbillon before finally patenting it in 1801. Amid political upheaval—from the Reign of Terror and the Directory to Napoleon’s return and the establishment of the Consulate—Breguet was laying the technical foundations of modern watchmaking, innovations that remain profoundly influential today.

- The present dial showcases the exposed tourbillon cage set within Breguet’s signature guilloché patterns. Its regulator‑style layout—originally used in reference clocks for optimum legibility—adds a further layer of refinement.

- Turning the watch over reveals a movement whose immaculate engravings and finishing are executed entirely by hand, a detail that will impress the most discerning collector. As a synthesis of artistic mastery and technical innovation, this timepiece stands as the quintessential expression of a Breguet tourbillon.

Breguet

Swiss | 1775

Established in 1775 by Abraham Louis Breguet, widely considered the greatest watchmaker of all time, the storied brand continues to thrive in the modern era, creating exceptional high-end watches as the Swatch Group's premier prestige brand. Some of the most important and lasting inventions in watchmaking are attributed to Abraham Louis Breguet, including the tourbillon, shock resistance and the use of hammers and gongs employed in nearly all minute repeating watches made since.

Eighteenth and nineteenth century Breguet pocketwatches are especially sought-after by collectors, and many of them were made for the elite of European society, including Napoléon and Marie Antoinette. Key wristwatches from the twentieth century include oversized dress watches, two-register chronographs, triple calendars and Type XX aviator's chronographs made for the French military and civilians.
