  • Catalogue Essay

Since Audemars Piguet has developed the first skeletonized pocket watch in 1934, the Maison has continued to perfect traditional art of openwork, and the skeletonized construction remains a key feature in the brand’s DNA.

Produced in circa 1983, the present specimen is lavishly adorned with twelve sapphire hour markers, and fifty-four 0.92 carat full cut diamonds on the bezel and bow. The 18K yellow gold gem-set engraved open-faced case harmonizes with the delicately hand-engraved bridges found on the movement, fully displaying the spectacular craftsmanship of Audemars Piguet. Stamped with a case maker’s mark number 23 on the case back, the extravagant case of the watch was made by Eggly & Cie from the Genève Canton.

The slender calibre 5020 encased within the yellow gold case was in production between 1979 and 1995, replacing the 5017 from the 60’s and 70’s. During this time, only around 1,000 calibre 5020 examples were made, including approximately 300 openworked versions. Marked by its impressive thinness, it was used for the brand’s pocket watch production starting with the Royal Oak 5691.

The Isetan Shinjuku stamped guarantee from 1983 hints that this dazzling pocket watch has caught the eyes of the original owner at the watch section on the fifth floor of the Isetan Tokyo flagship store, which has remained as one of the most important department stores in Japan, which its history dating back to 1886 when it first started as a kimono store. Preserved in excellent condition, it will without a doubt provide endless delight to its lucky new owner.
