  • Catalogue Essay

Reference 15002 is a faithful homage to the original reference 5402. Launched in 1996, Audemars Piguet had a stock of caliber 2121 that it wanted to house in a “Jumbo” 39mm Royal Oak case.

Aesthetically this reference was very close to the original reference 5402, so much so that many components were interchangeable. It featured the same monobloc case with a solid caseback and tapisserie dial, only the angle of the bevelled bezel was slightly modified to reach 45 degrees, compared with 40 degrees for ref 5402. The Audemars Piguet signature and applied AP logo were also larger than in the reference 5402.

During the three years this reference was in production only 183 were made in steel and 23 in yellow gold.

The present Royal Oak reference 15002 in steel is number 047 making it one of the earliest examples to grace the auction market. Preserved in absolutely stunning condition, and with an incredible dial that has turned to a homogeneous warm hazelnut color throughout, this timepiece is a unique opportunity for collectors of rare and early Royal Oaks not to be missed.

  • Artist Biography

    Audemars Piguet

    Swiss • 1881

A specialist in the manufacture of complications since it was established in 1881, Audemars Piguet never ceases to impress with a rich history of creating bold, even audacious, timepieces underpinned by traditional watchmaking at its finest. This Le Brassus-based Swiss manufacturer is one of only two major manufacturers still owned by the founding family. Since its earliest days, AP is considered a leader in the field of minute repeaters and grande complication pocket and wristwatches. The brand is devoted to preserving the history of watchmaking in the Vallée de Joux, showcased at their superb museum in Le Brassus.

Today, the brand is best known for its Royal Oak models, a revolutionary luxury sports watch launched in 1972. Other key models include early minute repeating wristwatches, vintage chronograph wristwatches, such as the oversized reference 5020, perpetual calendar watches and the Royal Oak Offshore, first introduced in 1993.
