  • Catalogue Essay

The present Royal Oak may seem understated with its steel case, white dial and leather strap but turn the watch over and any petrol head will skip a heart beat.
The reference was initially made as a limited edition of 1300 pieces for Banque Pictet and one piece was specially made for Jean Todt with a special engraving at the back that is properly documented on Audemars Piguet archives.

The caseback is engraved "Buon Compleanno Siamo Campioni del Mondo! Con Affetto Jean Todt 31.08.04" which translates from Italian to Happy Birthday We are World Champions. With Love Jean Todt.

Jean Todt was the General Manager of Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 Racing Team from 1994 to 2005 and we strongly believe the watch was offered to Luca di Montezemolo the Chairman of Ferrari at the time for the latter's 57th birthday in 2004.

Under the aegis of Todt and Montezemolo, Scuderia Ferrari reached Himalayan peaks: the 2004 F1 Championship was dominated by Michael Schumacher and Ferrari, with Schumacher winning the Drivers' Championship for the seventh and last time. Schumacher's teammate Rubens Barrichello finished the championship second, with Ferrari winning the Constructors' Championship for a record 14th time.

  • Artist Biography

    Audemars Piguet

    Swiss • 1881

A specialist in the manufacture of complications since it was established in 1881, Audemars Piguet never ceases to impress with a rich history of creating bold, even audacious, timepieces underpinned by traditional watchmaking at its finest. This Le Brassus-based Swiss manufacturer is one of only two major manufacturers still owned by the founding family. Since its earliest days, AP is considered a leader in the field of minute repeaters and grande complication pocket and wristwatches. The brand is devoted to preserving the history of watchmaking in the Vallée de Joux, showcased at their superb museum in Le Brassus.

Today, the brand is best known for its Royal Oak models, a revolutionary luxury sports watch launched in 1972. Other key models include early minute repeating wristwatches, vintage chronograph wristwatches, such as the oversized reference 5020, perpetual calendar watches and the Royal Oak Offshore, first introduced in 1993.
