  • Catalogue Essay

The reference 14802 saw the rebirth of the 39mm “Jumbo” Royal Oak for the 20th anniversary of the Royal Oak. Sold between 1992 and 2002, 691 examples were produced in steel (with 2 dial variations), 286 in yellow gold (with 4 dial variations), along with 20 in platinum (with 2 dial variations). Ref. 14802 introduced the first salmon pink dials as well as hammered "Tuscany blue" iterations, although there is no record of how many of these special dials were produced. In addition, a sapphire caseback revealed Calibre 2121 and most of the latter’s gold oscillating weights featured an anniversary motif accompanied by the case number.

Of the 691 examples of this reference released in stainless steel, only a few were fitted with the rare, resplendent salmon dial that has become in the intervening decades overwhelmingly desirable to collectors.

A time capsule, the present watch is distinguished by its most probably unpolished condition. All contrasting polished and brushed finishes remain intact, and show how a "factory spec" reference 14802 looked like when it left the factory. The salmon dial remains vibrant with barely any sign of aging - Audemars Piguet has even taken inspiration from this very model in its contemporary catalog with the reference 15202BC. Furthermore, all original accessories are present - even the original certificate and numbered box, indicating that the present watch is part of the Jubilée series.

Salmon dials in particular are rarely offered in the contemporary Audemars Piguet menu, and with less than 300 pieces ever produced, this is an extremely rare opportunity to obtain an extremely low production and absolutely gorgeous timepiece, perfect for the discerning collector.

    Audemars Piguet

    Swiss • 1881

A specialist in the manufacture of complications since it was established in 1881, Audemars Piguet never ceases to impress with a rich history of creating bold, even audacious, timepieces underpinned by traditional watchmaking at its finest. This Le Brassus-based Swiss manufacturer is one of only two major manufacturers still owned by the founding family. Since its earliest days, AP is considered a leader in the field of minute repeaters and grande complication pocket and wristwatches. The brand is devoted to preserving the history of watchmaking in the Vallée de Joux, showcased at their superb museum in Le Brassus.

Today, the brand is best known for its Royal Oak models, a revolutionary luxury sports watch launched in 1972. Other key models include early minute repeating wristwatches, vintage chronograph wristwatches, such as the oversized reference 5020, perpetual calendar watches and the Royal Oak Offshore, first introduced in 1993.
