The perpetual calendar has long been regarded as one of horology’s most admired complications, and few manufactures have mastered it as consistently as Audemars Piguet. In 1972, the firm revolutionized the luxury watch industry with the introduction of the Royal Oak, the world’s first luxury sports wristwatch in stainless steel with an integrated bracelet. More than a decade later, in 1984, these two pillars of the manufacture’s identity were united with the introduction of the first Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar, Reference 5554, powered by the ultra-thin Calibre 2120/2800.

Produced in limited numbers, only 279 examples of Reference 5554 were made: 229 in yellow gold, 49 in stainless steel and a single example in platinum. The following year, Audemars Piguet introduced Reference 25636, distinguished by its skeletonized dial, offering collectors an unobstructed view of the sophisticated perpetual calendar movement. In the 1990s, Reference 25829 continued this tradition, while adding a leap-year indication to the 12 o’clock register. Produced in a variety of metals, including stainless steel, platinum, yellow gold and pink gold, the reference was also offered in exceptionally rare two-tone combinations of tantalum and precious metals.

The present Reference 25829OR is an especially attractive example. Its 39 mm pink-gold case houses the enduringly slim Calibre 2120, preserving the elegant proportions and exceptional wearability that have long distinguished the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar. The perfectly symmetrical skeletonized dial complements the geometric architecture of the Royal Oak case, creating a harmonious balance between technical sophistication and aesthetic refinement.

Audemars Piguet

Swiss | 1881

A specialist in the manufacture of complications since it was established in 1881, Audemars Piguet never ceases to impress with a rich history of creating bold, even audacious, timepieces underpinned by traditional watchmaking at its finest. This Le Brassus-based Swiss manufacturer is one of only two major manufacturers still owned by the founding family. Since its earliest days, AP is considered a leader in the field of minute repeaters and grande complication pocket and wristwatches. The brand is devoted to preserving the history of watchmaking in the Vallée de Joux, showcased at their superb museum in Le Brassus.

Today, the brand is best known for its Royal Oak models, a revolutionary luxury sports watch launched in 1972. Other key models include early minute repeating wristwatches, vintage chronograph wristwatches, such as the oversized reference 5020, perpetual calendar watches and the Royal Oak Offshore, first introduced in 1993.
