Catalogue Essay

Created to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Royal Oak, the reference 14802 was produced in a limited edition of 1,000 pieces: 700 in steel, 280 in yellow gold and 20 in platinum, paying tribute to the original Royal Oak reference 5402. With a 39mm case diameter, it faithfully honors the design of the original Royal Oak from 1972, with the most significant update being the sapphire caseback that showcases the movement and rotor, engraved to commemorate this special edition.

The present watch is remarkable for its extraordinary condition—the case is well-preserved with minimal wear and all hallmarks remain crisp and visible. The dial is particularly striking, exhibiting no signs of oxidation, a common issue in many other examples that have aged unevenly. This suggests it was rarely worn and primarily kept in a safe. It also features the rare early font of the “Audemars Piguet” signature, which is absent in later iterations of this reference. Additionally, the included digital Extract from the Archives confirms that the watch was manufactured in 1993.

As an already rare model, this timepiece is even more exceptional due to its pristine state of preservation. With over half a century having passed since the Royal Oak's introduction in 1972, "Jubilee" pieces like this one are poised to become increasingly collectible, marking another milestone in the illustrious history of the Royal Oak.

Audemars Piguet

Swiss | 1881

A specialist in the manufacture of complications since it was established in 1881, Audemars Piguet never ceases to impress with a rich history of creating bold, even audacious, timepieces underpinned by traditional watchmaking at its finest. This Le Brassus-based Swiss manufacturer is one of only two major manufacturers still owned by the founding family. Since its earliest days, AP is considered a leader in the field of minute repeaters and grande complication pocket and wristwatches. The brand is devoted to preserving the history of watchmaking in the Vallée de Joux, showcased at their superb museum in Le Brassus.

Today, the brand is best known for its Royal Oak models, a revolutionary luxury sports watch launched in 1972. Other key models include early minute repeating wristwatches, vintage chronograph wristwatches, such as the oversized reference 5020, perpetual calendar watches and the Royal Oak Offshore, first introduced in 1993.
