Catalogue Essay
- Rarely used in watchmaking due to its hardness and high melting point, tantalum is a material that you hardly see in wristwatches, but not in Audemars Piguet’s catalogue. According to our research, Audemars Piguet pioneered their first tantalum watch at the behest of King Juan Carlos of Spain, who wanted a Royal Oak with a stealth-like tone for hunting purposes.
- Preserved in its absolutely unworn condition in original manufacture specs, the present ref. 14470TR in two-tone tantalum and 18K pink gold is a truly rare find. Contrasted with the rosy warmth of pink gold, the pairing presents a perfect balance from opposite ends of the spectrum.
- Sized at 30mm diameter with pure elegance, the colorway translates to the brushed grey dial and pink gold accents with equal beauty. Petite in its diameter where one might expect it would be a quartz powered timepiece, the present ref. 14470 is powered by a miniature self-winding calibre 2150 introduced in the mid-1980s.
- A “new-old-stock” time capsule piece acquired by the original owner in 1999, the present 14470TR is an exceptional iteration of an icon, rendered in one of the coolest case material combinations ever found on a Royal Oak. It is offered further offered with its complete accessories. Please note that the proceeds of the sale of the present watch will be given by the Consignor to various charities.
