Catalogue Essay
--The Lange 1 and its subsequent evolution is undoubtedly the collection best exemplifying not only the rebirth of A. Lange & Söhne but also that of Saxon watchmaking. When Ferdinand A. Lange’s great-grandson Walter Lange relaunched the brand in 1990 following the reunification of Germany, his first mission was to design a new face for the company. The Lange 1 was one of the four original timepieces released in 1994 by the relaunched brand, with the model featuring all the traits which are now eponymous with A. Lange & Söhne.

--A. Lange & Söhne released the Lange 1 Time Zone in 2005 as part of a broader expansion of the collection. The dual time model features an ingenious second time zone subsidiary dial at 4 o’clock for the local time with outer city ring on the rim of the dial. The small arrow within the local time dial points at the city for which the local time is currently set. The watch further features day/night indications for both local and home time, as well as quick-set pushers at 10 o’clock for date, and at 8 o’clock to quick set the city. These features make the wristwatch exceptionally easy to use during travel and is highly legible.

--The Lange 1 was offered in yellow gold (ref. 116.021), pink gold (116.032) and like the present watch, platinum (116.025) featuring the legendary in-house caliber L.031.1 with signature ¾ plate and hand-engraved balance cock.

--This Lange 1 Time Zone is offered complete with its original accessories and guarantee, and is preserved in excellent overall condition, having in our opinion never been polished.

A. Lange & Söhne

German | 1845
Originally founded in 1845 by Ferdinand Adolph Lange in Glashütte, Dresden, Germany, the firm established an entire watchmaking culture and industry in Glashütte. The brand quickly became Germany's finest watchmaker, first creating dependable, easy-to-repair watches before going on to produce some of the world's finest complicated pocket watches, including Grande Sonnerie watches, tourbillon watches and Grande Complications.
On the final day of World War II, their factories were destroyed by Russian bombers, and in 1948 the brand was confiscated by the Soviet Union. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, Ferdinand's great grandson Walter Lange re-established the brand with the objective to once again produce top-quality luxury watches. Now part of the Richemont Group, its original vintage and modern creations are highly coveted by collectors. Key models from the modern era include the Lange 1, Pour Le Mérite Tourbillon and the Zeitwerk.
