Catalogue Essay
Since its rebirth in 1994, A. Lange & Söhne has produced some of the finest timepieces, showcasing designs that reflect its German heritage. While some enthusiasts occasionally view their lineup as relatively conservative, Lange consistently creates timepieces that incorporate a hint of flair. A significant breakthrough came with the introduction of the Lumen series in 2010.

The Lumen series shares a distinctive characteristic: a translucent, smoky gray sapphire dial filled with luminous material for its features. Released in 2016, the Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase Lumen is an exclusive limited edition of just 200 pieces. This model refreshes the appeal of the original Grand Lange 1 Lumen launched in 2013 by adding an oversized moon phase complication.

The unique smoky sapphire dial allows UV rays to penetrate, causing the luminous components to light up while maintaining excellent legibility. The moon phases, crafted from the same material, features 1,164 stars and a moon that are precisely laser-cut onto the moon disc. A luminous coating enables a captivating galaxy effect when illuminated. Once set, the moon phase function requires correction by only one calendar day every 122.6 years.

Combining true innovation with aesthetic appeal, the Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase Lumen has garnered increasing demand alongside all Lange timepieces. This particular example of the A. Lange & Söhne Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase Lumen is offered in excellent overall condition, complete with its full set of accessories.

A. Lange & Söhne

German | 1845
Originally founded in 1845 by Ferdinand Adolph Lange in Glashütte, Dresden, Germany, the firm established an entire watchmaking culture and industry in Glashütte. The brand quickly became Germany's finest watchmaker, first creating dependable, easy-to-repair watches before going on to produce some of the world's finest complicated pocket watches, including Grande Sonnerie watches, tourbillon watches and Grande Complications.
On the final day of World War II, their factories were destroyed by Russian bombers, and in 1948 the brand was confiscated by the Soviet Union. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, Ferdinand's great grandson Walter Lange re-established the brand with the objective to once again produce top-quality luxury watches. Now part of the Richemont Group, its original vintage and modern creations are highly coveted by collectors. Key models from the modern era include the Lange 1, Pour Le Mérite Tourbillon and the Zeitwerk.
