  • Catalogue Essay

    - A. Lange & Söhne’s Lange 1 collection is the epitome of a modern classic. First introduced in 1994, it has maintained its contemporary edge while evolving into a symbol of sophisticated design and technical mastery. The dial, renowned for its clarity and balance, features the now-iconic oversized date apertures—a patented design inspired by the Five-Minute Clock of Dresden’s Semper Opera House. The off-center hour display further cemented the Lange 1’s status as a visionary creation, setting it apart from anything else in the world of haute horology. Over the years, the Lange 1 has grown from a “simple” time-and-date watch into a versatile collection, offering complications such as moon phases and perpetual calendars, as well as variations in size, from the 36mm Little Lange 1 to the commanding 41mm Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase.

    - The Grand Lange 1 made its debut in 2003 with a bold 41.9mm case, but in 2012, Lange refined the design, reducing the diameter to a more elegant 41mm. The Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase, like the present watch, followed in 2014, powered by the updated in-house caliber L095.3, and introduced a beautifully integrated moon phase display at 12 o’clock within the signature offset time display.

    - A. Lange & Söhne is celebrated for its unparalleled craftsmanship and precision, and this platinum Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase is a testament to those values. Preserved in excellent condition and accompanied by its original accessories, this exquisite timepiece offers collectors a rare opportunity to own a masterpiece of modern watchmaking.

  • Artist Biography

    A. Lange & Söhne

    German • 1845

Originally founded in 1845 by Ferdinand Adolph Lange in Glashütte, Dresden, Germany, the firm established an entire watchmaking culture and industry in Glashütte. The brand quickly became Germany's finest watchmaker, first creating dependable, easy-to-repair watches before going on to produce some of the world's finest complicated pocket watches, including Grande Sonnerie watches, tourbillon watches and Grande Complications.

On the final day of World War II, their factories were destroyed by Russian bombers, and in 1948 the brand was confiscated by the Soviet Union. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, Ferdinand's great grandson Walter Lange re-established the brand with the objective to once again produce top-quality luxury watches. Now part of the Richemont Group, its original vintage and modern creations are highly coveted by collectors. Key models from the modern era include the Lange 1, Pour Le Mérite Tourbillon and the Zeitwerk.
