Consuelo Kanaga met photographer Imogen Cunningham during her time in San Francisco, and exhibited work alongside her in the seminal Group f.64 show in 1932. As women artists working in a field dominated by men, the two formed a strong connection. In a letter to The Museum of Modern Art, New York, curator Grace Mayer, Kanaga said of Cunningham, ‘She is the greatest woman I have ever known in Photography. Generous, human, and brave’ (Consuelo Kanaga: An American Photographer, p. 211).
