Sensational yet delicate, intimate but universal, the masterpieces of Japanese contemporary artists Yayoi Kusama and Chiharu Shiota curate alternative realities in the anchors of everyday objects, from pumpkins and butterflies to children’s dresses. Shiota, through the intricate weavings of threads around found items, and Kusama, by canonizing the imageries visualized in her childhood hallucinations, brilliantly channel their anxieties into the most magnificent imageries, echoing the vestige of societal development in post war Japan and the boundaries of physicality in an increasingly isolated modern world.
Although five decades apart in age, the two Japanese female artists have shared an aspiration for art since childhood that led to their artistic pursuits in the United States and Europe, where they have respectively enjoyed the most prestigious international accolades. In this exhibition, the two masterminds’ highly stylized oeuvres come in unison to investigate humans and objects as vessels of connection and consciousness.
Juxtaposing the two artists for the first time in such monumental scale, Phillips Hong Kong is pleased to present (Re)Trace, an exhibition featuring works by these two Japanese contemporary art sensations. The exhibition includes a non-selling group of artworks by Chiharu Shiota, generously loaned by Mr. Jay Pang of ARTICKS as the largest collection of the artist ever presented to the public in Hong Kong. Showcased alongside this group of museum grade works are iconic creations by the two female artists, available through Phillips’ Private Sales. The selection of works presented are sublime examples of the two artists’ exquisite output, spanning decades of practice and highlighting their most accomplished vision.
