1.
Katherine Bernhardt Untitled, 2016. Estimate: £4,000-6,000.
I’ve been a fan of Katherine Bernhardt’s joyful paintings for a while - who wouldn’t like to be surrounded by all the things that make us happy! Watermelons, bananas, ice-cream, what else?! Lot 1 opens this curated auction with a statement.
2.
Eddie Martinez Bay Area, 2016. Estimate: £80,000-120,000.
Lot 2, Bay Area is a captivating monumental example of an abstract composition that is so characteristic of Eddie Martinez’s best work. The piece evokes the childlike freedom through the use of colour and fluidity of movement – I love the dreamlike feeling it alludes.
3.
Josh Smith Untitled (#3), 2006. Estimate: £7,000-10,000.
Josh Smith’s “name paintings” are part of his early body of work, which is probably his most significant. This elegant monochromatic example is being offered at an extremely attractive estimate.
4.
Wolfgang Tillmans Blautopf, rain, 2001. Estimate: £5,000-7,000.
Wolfgang Tillmans has always been a favourite of mine – his eye is just incredible. This particular work is a lovely reminder of “where I would rather be right now”.
5.
Elizabeth Peyton Prince Harry, 1998. Estimate: £25,000-35,000.
Elizabeth Peyton is a little gem in this auction (lot 11). Prince Harry is a beautiful example of Peyton’s gift as a portraitist, often at her best in small-scale works. Her recent solo show at The National Portrait Gallery in London gained her renewed and much-deserved attention.
6.
Sol Lewitt Wavy Vertical Brushstrokes, 1993. Estimate: £5,000-7,000.
Sol LeWitt is a master of line, as well as colour – Wavy Vertical Brushstrokes, 1993, is a great example of both line and colour being in complete harmony with each other. I resonate with the meditative feeling this work conveys.
7.
Donald Judd Standing Writing Desk #40, designed 1984, executed 2012. Estimate: £5,000-7,000.
Donald Judd’s approach to the use of space and line is second to none. I love this desk as it’s both functional and a work of art.
