A Fancy Intense Yellow Diamond Ring from the collection of Irma Nicolas. Estimate: $150,000–250,000. The New York Jewels Auction.
Born in 1932 in San Antonio, Texas, Irma Cortez was the first member of her family born in the United States. Her father, Raoul Cortez, Sr., was a pioneering force in media, credited with introducing the Spanish-language radio and television to the continental U.S. His station became the forerunner to what is now TelevisaUnivision, the world’s largest Spanish-language media company. He instilled in his children a profound sense of pride in their Mexican heritage, along with a commitment to advocacy, serving two terms as president of the League of United Latin American Citizens. From a young age, he included his daughter and family in his dreams to provide a voice for Mexican Americans. His work ethic also shaped his daughter’s perspective.
In 1953, at the age of 21, Irma married Emilio Nicolas, who first captured her heart at her debutante ball. Two years later, Emilio joined the family business, and together they formed a formidable partnership. With Irma at his side, they helped build the enterprise into what would become Univision, expanding Spanish-language radio and TV programming across America. Irma and Emilio raised their three children in San Antonio, remaining deeply committed to their community through ongoing philanthropy and cultural engagement. As Texas Public Radio’s former CEO and President noted, “Irma Nicolas was an amazing woman — a pioneer alongside her husband Emilio.”
