Good To Know:
- No. 18 from the Subscription series cased in titanium, one of only two to feature guilloché dial
- The first Tourbillon à Paris to debut at auction
- The prototype of the model was one of the winners of the F.P. Journe Young Talent Competition in 2018
Théo Auffret’s Tourbillon à Paris shows that French watchmaking tradition is still alive in Paris. He is quickly becoming one of the most compelling young voices in the world of contemporary watchmaking. A graduate of Lycée Polyvalent Edgar Faure in Morteau, Auffret took apprenticeship with Denis Corpechot and then with Jean-Baptiste Viot in Paris where he mastered traditional hand-finishing. Later in Switzerland with Luca Soprana sharpened his skill in prototyping and high complications. He returned to Paris all the same. That homecoming is not incidental, Auffret belongs to a culture that still believes the finest watches are conceived on paper and by hand.
In 2018, at only 23, Théo Auffret won the F.P. Journe Young Talent Competition with the Tourbillon à Paris prototype. The unfinished prototype cased in silver was drawn with pen and paper and built after hours on Viot’s machines. That is the French apprenticeship in miniature: learn the old work until you can invent from it. Numbered 00, it was the first watch to bear his name; later refinished and sold. It became the foundation of his first serially produced model, offered by subscription in a conscious nod to F.P. Journe and the older masters. A limited run of 14 pieces followed.
Numbered 18, the present piece is the first subscription piece to debut at auction, and the second piece to appear following the No.00 prototype. Sized at 38.5mm in a titanium case. It displays an off-centre hours with gold markers and guilloche decoration, central minutes, a large golden barrel of 50 hours reserve at 12 and a tourbillon at 8, each held by a broad finger bridge. Hands are characterized with a square bases and teardrop shaped tip. The German-silver plates receives a Parisian touch with charbonage finishing. A pink gold plaque with “AUFFRET” signs off this creation at 6 contrasting the yellow tone of the of the watch. Its movement is finished by hand to the highest quality featuring sharp anglage.
This is one of only two Tourbillon à Paris subscription finished with a guilloché dial of the 15 pieces produced and delivered in 2023.
Please note that Auffret Paris generously offers a complementary servicing of the watch to the winning bidder within a period of 6 months after the sale.
