  • “I always emphasize the idea of emptiness. I think this is what becomes the predominant, or most important, element in my work. I pay attention not to the mainstream but rather the subtle things that you might ignore sometimes.”
    — Zhang Enli

Between 2003 and the 2010s, Zhang Enli began to depict everyday objects that used ‘pure blocks of color, line, and shape as a means of expression.’ [i] In Leather Hose (ZELU334) Zhang uses a heavy, thick line to portray a coiled hose, emphasizing the materiality of the object and the fluidity of its form. Untethered, the object seems to float freely in space as Zhang draws attention to the quiet, yet prosaic presence of this commonplace object.

Based in Shanghai, Zhang has held numerous solo exhibitions worldwide such as the Long Museum, Chongqing, China; K11 Foundation, China; Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei, Taiwan; ICA Institute of Contemporary Art, London, UK; and more. His works are in the permanent collections of K11 Foundation, China; Tate London, UK; and more. Currently, the artist has a solo exhibition with HEM He Art Museum in Guangdong, China. Featuring over 50 paintings and site-specific installations, the exhibition will be on view through May 14, 2023.
