  • Catalogue Essay

Referencing the traditional Japanese art of the Kano School, Yoshitomo Mizutani’s photographs explore the relationship between negative and positive spaces. Here, the artist photographed pine trees against the dark sky, using strobe light and an extended exposure. The result is a visually ornate image that collapses the space between background and foreground while presenting a wholly original rendering of the night sky.
