\n\n

For the Maximalist

\n\n

\n\n

Verdura, Topaz and Gem-set Maltese Cross Pendant Brooch. New York Jewels: Online Auction.

\n\n

They simply can’t have enough. In defiance of the age-old adage, less is certainly not more for this friend. This aspect of their personality shines through their accessories, of which there are likely many. The best option for them is a timeless Verdura Maltese Cross. The bright colors, yellow gold, variously shaped gemstones, and imaginative design will match their love for all things extra.

\n\n

For the Friend Who’s Always Late

\n\n

\n\n

Verdura, Gold Beehive Watch Charm Bracelet. New York Jewels: Online Auction.

\n\n

You know the one. They only get by because when they finally do show up, they’re so impeccably elegant and put together that we can’t help but forgive their tardiness. Seeming to never wear any single item twice, we assume that their closets and jewel boxes are as ludicrously capacious as their bags. The trick here, of course, is to gift them a statement timepiece, even though we know they’ll never set it. The real joy for them will be adding another item to their favorite ritual — trying on everything they own before they leave. We can’t blame them since this ceremony is likely more fun than the party they’re late for.

\n\n

For the Nature Lover

\n\n

\n\n

Verdura, Pair of Quartz and Nephrite Jade Earclips, New York Jewels: Online Auction.

\n\n

When they’re not out hiking a trail and chronicling the butterflies they see, they’re likely at home on a yoga mat transcending their earthly existence. We all cherish this friend, as their presence helps us zoom out from our busy days and brings us in-tune with life both big and small. This friend needs for little, but there’s nothing like a talisman that reminds them of their gentle companions that roam the earth. We’d suggest perusing jewels that take the form of ladybugs, a shell or two, a frog, or this pair of unexpected friends.

\n\n

For the Welcoming Friend

\n\n

\n\n

Verdura, Pair of Diamond Earclips. New York Jewels: Online Auction.

\n\n

When you visit their home, you don’t want to leave. Their table setting always looks like a still life painting and you’ve never met such a gracious host. This friend has given you so many fond memories filled with laughter, food, and wine, that they deserve something truly exceptional. And what better gift for this friend than earrings taking the form of pineapples? After all, there’s a reason the fruit is known as a symbol of hospitality and we’re hard pressed to imagine anyone more hospitable.

\n\n

But what’s better than pineapple, we asked? Diamonds of course. And the masterful skill of the House of Verdura.

\n\n

For the Astrologer

\n\n

\n\n

Verdura, Diamond Leo Zodiac Sign Pendent Necklace. New York Jewels: Online Auction.

\n\n

With a full moon in Gemini on the horizon, this friend will already be preparing their rituals and manifestations to release any limiting beliefs before the year comes to a close. Gift the strong, confident energy of Leo this holiday season so your zodiac-minded bestie’s stars align and shine through the festive weeks.

Verdura, Topaz and Colored Gemstones Maltese Cross Pendant Brooch (Lot 191). New York Jewels: Online Auction.

\n\n

Stunning pieces from the house of Verdura feature in our NEW YORK JEWELS: ONLINE AUCTION from 22 to 29 November. View auction.

\n\n

Verdura, which opened in 1939 at 712 Fifth Avenue in New York City, was founded by Fulco Santostefano, Duke of Verdura (1898 – 1978). An Italian nobleman with magnetic personal charm and superb taste; Fulco’s iconic designs have been cherished by some of the world’s most fashionable people. From the start his fans included royals such as the Duchesses of Windsor and Marlborough, Countess Mona Von Bismarck, Princess Grace of Monaco along with the greatest film stars of the time, including Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, and Marlene Dietrich. One piece even featured in Alfred Hitchcock’s film Suspicion. Many enjoyed making Fulco’s designs integral components to their signature styles — Diana Vreeland, the Astors and Vanderbilts, and Jackie Kennedy. Babe Paley was Fulco’s good friend and muse. Cole Porter and Vincent Astor were his financial backers. He knew everyone, it is said; and the natural ease of his creations took the beau monde by storm.

\n\n

Fulco was born into an eccentric noble family in Palermo, surrounded by sumptuous Italian luxury. Early inspirations were drawn from the elaborate, aristocratic splendor of his family’s palazzo alongside his fascination with Renaissance art. He’s also been noted as saying his eye for color developed inside the many costume soirees, he attended throughout Europe in the 1920’s.

Verdura, Enamel and Gemset Maltese Cross Charm Bracelet (Lot 190). New York Jewels: Online Auction.

\n\n

From Italy, Fulco went to Paris and through the roaring twenties, he mingled with the likes of Picasso, Hemingway, Diaghilev, Niki de Gunzburg, Daisy Fellowes, and the Rothschilds. In 1925, a serendipitous introduction to the wildly successful Coco Chanel led her to bring the young artist on as a textile consultant and, subsequently, as her head of jewelry design. The two got on beautifully. Becoming close, they travelled together in 1930 to see the mosaic of the Byzantine Empress Theodora in the Chapel of Ravenna. He envisioned in its warmth and color an alternative to the Deco diamond-and-platinum jewelry style popular at that time. It was for Chanel that he created his most notable design — the Maltese Cross — an alluring emblematic symbol glittered with color that calls to mind medieval history. For years, it became part of her signature personal look. She wore two such bangles — one on either arm — nearly every day.

\n\n

Verdura, Diamond and Lapis Lazuli Ring (Lot 189). New York Jewels: Online Auction.

\n\n

The house of Verdura flourished for decades. Fulco continued to create and collaborate with some of the most notable figures of the 20th Century, including “Jeweler to the Stars” Paul Flato and legendary Surrealist Salvador Dali. With his keen eye for color and bold designs, he created many iconic pieces, some of which include his puffed wrapped hearts, roped knot motifs and gem-studded shell jewelry. Since 1985, owners Ward and Nico Landrigan have continued to keep Verdura’s artistry alive, drawing from the designer’s extensive archives and original sketches. His exquisite treasures remain among the most coveted.
