  • Wei Jia is a renowned artist born in 1975 in Chengdu, China. He currently resides and works in Chongqing, China. In 1999, Wei Jia obtained his degree from the Printmaking Department of Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. In addition to his artistic pursuits, he has taken on an educational role, teaching at the Department of Printmaking at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. His artistic journey saw a shift between 2003 and 2004 when he began experimenting with acrylic paint. This transition allowed him to incorporate elements typically found in printmaking pieces into his paintings, creating a unique blend of the two mediums.

Sold by Phillips London for £37,500, 3 October 2019

Wei Jia's early works resonate with narratives filled with youthful and rebellious sensitivities. However, around 2010, his artistic focus evolved. He delved deeper into the exploration of human nature, emphasizing themes of singularity and universality. Through his art, Wei Jia seeks to understand the intricate relationship between the individual and the collective. In Time Elapsed, 2015, Wei Jia portrays an apocalyptic world where the sole human being stood alone on top of the mountain. The sense of isolation is reminiscent of Matthew Wong’s works in which the artist frequently featured a solitary lone wanderer in a dreamland.
