Phillips is delighted to present pieces from an esteemed Belgian collection, spanning significant decades of European and American contemporary art and photography. This carefully curated selection is centered around pivotal works that helped define the very notions of conceptual and minimalist art as well as the tightly-knit 'Pictures Generation' operating in New York City during the 1970s, offering an intercontinental perspective on the most influential movements of the post-war art world.

\n\n

Among the featured artists on offer are Rudolf Stingel, Cindy Sherman, Christopher Wool, Robert Longo and Bernd and Hilla Becher. Browse select works below and view them in person at 30 Berkeley Square now through our Evening Sale and Day Sale auctions on 8 and 10 March respectively.

Provoking consideration of the tensions and contradictions associated with the aestheticisation of surface, the group includes Rudolf Stingel's Untitled, 1989, Untitled, 1997 and Christopher Wool's Untitled, 1989. Both artists question the construction of a painting and how mechanisms of creation can impact upon ones visual experience.

\n\n

Providing further insight into this discourse, Steven Parrino's Squeaky Fromme, 1987 explores varied mechanical processes of creation, echoing his notion that "radicalism comes from content and not necessarily form."

Visually diverse, the wide range of media present in the collection is exemplified by the influential Bernd and Hilla Becher's photographic exploration of industrial landscapes in Water Towers, 1965-1997. Juxtaposed with Francis Alÿs' exploration of his environment in Cityscapes - (con sabana), 1993, the artists enter the thematic thread of their surroundings.

\n\n

Through the engagement of sign painters in the creation of his Cityscapes, Alÿs employs commercial iconography, similar to Barbara Kruger with her Untitled (Our Time is Your Money), 1985, both artists addressing cultural constructs of power. Confronting crucial themes from the past decade, the collection considers mechanisms of perception and creation, the role of the artist within his surroundings and the significance of commercial iconography in the post-war art world.

Another strand of this Belgian collection provides unique and in-depth insight into the work of the tightly-knit 'Pictures Generation', artists operating in New York City during the 1970s, with highlights including prints from Cindy Sherman's Untitled Film Stills and Robert Longo's iconic Men in Cities series.

A thought-provoking dialogue is also established with the ground-breaking appropriation art of the 1980s, allowing an unparalleled look into the relationships between artists like Sherrie Levine, Louise Lawler and Laurie Simmons, their subjects and the younger generations they continue to influence.

\n\n

Sherrie Levine began challenging concepts of appropriation in the early 1980s when she explicitly re-photographed works by famous photographers such as Edward Weston and Walker Evans. Her work addresses the limitations within modernist cannons and interrogates the notions of authenticity and representation. In this below lot, Parchment Knot: 3 from 2003, Levine channels a Duchampian re-contextualization of the found object and elevates a ready-made — in this case, shipping materials — into a meticulously crafted art object.

Artsy: Can you start by describing your curatorial vision for the sale? How do you balance representation of iconic 20th century artists and contemporary trailblazers?

\n\n

Tamila Kerimova: The sale is extremely diverse, as is the taste of collectors today as people increasingly look to collect across categories – bringing together works of different eras, genres and media. It is wonderful to be able to offer a work by today's superstar Adrian Ghenie alongside a work on paper by Pablo Picasso, the twentieth-century heavyweight. What is important for me, regardless of the time the works were produced, is to bring a selection that is relevant in the current time to the viewer.

I am particularly pleased to be offering a Freischwimmer by Wolfgang Tillmans and a work on paper with collage by Robert Rauschenberg – two completely different artists whose stunning retrospectives currently share the same floor at Tate Modern. The sale presents the perfect opportunity for those who loved these shows to add a piece to their collections.

A: This sale encompasses a wide selection of media and subject matter. Which works would you highlight for collectors interested in material-based artistic investigation?

\n\n

TK: We have a strong selection of works in which the materials used become the focal point of the artwork. Among them is the beautiful black monochrome painting by Ad Reinhardt from 1955, the gorgeous John Chamberlain sculpture executed on a small scale, the heavily impastoed painting by André Butzer, among others.

\n\n

\n\n

\n\n

A: How about more conceptual works?

\n\n

TK: There is a wide range of conceptual works in the sale, led by Sherrie Levine, Richard Pettibone, Haim Steinbach, Fischli & Weiss. The latter deserves a special mention as it is rare to come across a good quality work by the duo on the market. Made out of rubber and coated with polyurethane paint to replicate the objects in the studio, the work is a great example from the series they began in 1982, where we see the artists giving worthless everyday objects the status of art and alluding to the banality of life.

Peter Fischli & David Weiss Untitled, 1994-2002

\n\n

A: Can you walk us through some works of notable provenance or distinction within an artist's oeuvre?

\n\n

TK: We are proud to present a selection of works from an important Belgian Collection, which features excellent examples by the Pictures Generation artists such as Cindy Sherman, Barbara Kruger, Sherrie Levine, Robert Longo, Louise Lawler and Jack Goldstein. The collection sits alongside important European artists such as Gerhard Richter, Alighiero Boetti, Maurizio Cattelan, Andreas Gursky, Bernd and Hilla Becher and Thomas Ruff, which creates a beautifully curated section of high quality works that make this sale very special.

\n\n

A: Finally, what are some trends you have seen within the contemporary art market this year, and how do you see them evolving as we head into the spring season?

\n\n

TK: It seems that the trend of moving away from process-based work is continuing, with figurative work being the popular style at the moment. We saw strong prices achieved for good examples by George Condo in November last year, and gallery shows by Ella Kruglianskaya, Mernet Larsen and Sanya Kantarovsky completely sell out. The much-anticipated Tillmans retrospective currently on view at Tate Modern, together with his upcoming show at the Beyeler Foundation, has made the artist a 'market darling' in the past year, which is greatly deserved. I hope this momentum will continue for him.
