First introduced in 1968, the four-leaf clover in the 'Alhambra' Collection soon became a signature design of the House. Women from all over the world fell under the spell of these quatrefoils that symbolize luck, fortune, love and health, including Princess Grace of Monaco who was seen styling multiple strands of Alhambra necklaces on many occasions. The clover shape is borrowed from and named after the Moorish quatrefoil, which appeared as scalloped archways in the Alhambra Palace in Granada. The current necklace is possibly a vintage 1970's Alhambra necklace, distinguished from the recent production by the coiled wire links and a solo quatrefoil set as a pendant in the middle of the chain.

With their background in precious stone dealing, the Arpels found their perfect match in the Van Cleefs, a family of expert stonecutters. In 1906, Estelle's brother Charles established the company name with Alfred's help and opened shop in the Place Vendôme in Paris.
