  • Catalogue Essay

The white resin Ugo Rondinone employs captures artificial light in a way
reminiscent of radiating summer sunlight; a glow is cast in the exhibition
hall, silhouetting the tree’s shape, an almost stereotypical Romantic vision,
against a stark contemporary perspective of the gallery hall. When The
Water Went South For The Winter It Carried Us Down Like Storm Driven Gulls
(2003), is part of a series of sculptures Rondinone created to pay homage to
his family and roots. Cast from the olive trees of his parent’s hometown
of Matera, Italy, the trees he selected as models for this group of works are
over 100 years old. In this way, the artist speaks to his family origins and
represents a time and destination of another era within a fixed position of
    contemporary art.
