The places in Michael Raedecker’s paintings feel familiar yet simultaneously
evoke an experience of displacement. This unsettling nostalgia persuades the
viewer. Modern Americana moments are melded with the spare
compositions of Chinese and Japanese painting. These sentiments are
further reinforced with Raedecker’s particular use of materials. The
embroidered canvas recalls traditions in handicraft, the comfort of the
homemade, while the paint on canvas bears a high art. Spatialmanipulations
with craftsmanship are synthesized for maximum effect. “It could be said
that the fibers in his work give him and us something to come home to, loose
threads that actually our shared experience of what should remain
impermeable in painting,” (T. R. Myers, “No Place Like Homelessness,”
    Parkett, no. 65, 2002, p. 110).
