The paintings are about my imagination as to a new view, or a new look at the
    speed of light.
James Rosenquist, taken from James Rosenquist: A Retrospective, NewYork,
    2003, p. 230
For much of James Rosenquist’s career, a fascination with technology,
space, and scientific phenomena has informed his work. In the dynamic
Speed of Light series (1999-2001), the most abstract canvases he has ever
done, Rosenquist articulates changed perceptions at incredible speeds.
Vivid color forms and gestures react with precisely and illusionistically
painted reflective elements producing vibrations and a ricochet effect.
“...They remind me of the light show at the end of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001
(1968). Some waves bounce of off the reflective areas at crazy angles, other
bounce around within them.Things get explosive,” (ibid, p. 13).
