Tyler Mitchell

American
Tyler Mitchell is known for his vibrant, musical images of Black leisure. He depicts his subjects in utopic settings, bathed in the light of a perpetual summertime golden hour. Mitchell offers a counter-possibility to mainstream representations of Blackness, motivated by “an urgency to visualize Black people as free, expressive, effortless, and sensitive.” His photographs are cinematic and fluid, bringing a sense of play to the boundary between fashion and fine art photography.

In 2018, when Mitchell was 23, he photographed Beyoncé for the cover of Vogue, making history as the first Black photographer to shoot a cover image for the magazine. Soon after, he was included in the landmark traveling exhibition and book, The New Black Vanguard, curated by Antwaun Sargent, which celebrates 15 international Black photographers at the cutting edge of fashion and fine art photography.
